Books That Shaped My Childhood!

Like many others in the bookish community, my love for books was sparked by books that I took particular interest in in my childhood! From being read Roald Dahl as a kid to discovering the works of Jacqueline Wilson and Enid Blyton in my preteens, I’ve accumulated a whole range of books that had a big impact on my childhood, some of which will be listed below!

 

George’s Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl

 

I’m going to start with this book because it’s the one that truly made me realize the joy that could come from reading! This is a story that was read to me multiple times, and is one that I then continued to pick up time and time again. Following George as he creates a new ‘medicine’ for his rather cruel grandmother was (and still is) so much fun, and it was a funny read that quickly became and still remains a firm favorite!!

 

 

 

The Bed and Breakfast Star by Jacqueline Wilson

 

This was the first Jacqueline Wilson book that I remember reading, and the main thing I remember about it is that I enjoyed it thoroughly. This was a book that I would read and reread almost every single night because I loved it so much! This book brilliantly deals with the issue of homelessness, with the jokes that the main character is so fond of being integrated perfectly! This is a book that I would definitely recommend to any young readers, and was one that I absolutely loved!

 

 

 

Best Friends by Jacqueline Wilson

 

This is another of Jacqueline Wilson’s books that I absolutely loved! This is a book that deals with the hardship that you can face in a friendship, and presents an important message in a brilliant way. This book was filled with emotion, and was one that particularly moved me as a child!

 

 

 

 

Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo

 

This was a book that I had to read for school, and I was so glad that I did! It is a WWI novel that sensitively deals with a multitude of issues, and was one that evoked a lot of emotion. I remember particularly liking the prose at the time, and it became a favorite of mine for a very long time!

 

 

 

 

Eragon (The Inheritance Cycle) by Christopher Paolini

 

While in middle school a friend of mine suggested that I read this, and when I did I immediately became obsessed! This book was phenomenal to my young little mind, and really opened the way to my love for fantasy! Just thinking about this book makes me smile despite not having read it for years, which I feel shows just how strong my love for it was!!

 

 

 

 

I certainly haven’t included every book that impacted me as a child as if I hadn’t limited myself to five books this blog post would’ve been a runner up for longest blog post in history! That said, I’d still like to give an honorable mention to Harry Potter (of course!), The Famous Five by Enid Blyton and James and the Giant Peach!
